Earthlinked DX®
The Earthlinked DX system exchanges heat energy with the earth via a direct buried refrigerant-to-earth heat exchanger constructed from refrigeration grade copper tubing. This heat exchanger is part of the unit, not a sub-system.
In heating, energy flows from the earth to the refrigerant and then from the refrigerant to the home - a total of two heat exchanges. In cooling, heat flows from the home to the refrigerant and then from the refrigerant to the earth. Again, two heat exchanges.

Closed Loop
The closed loop system exchanges heat energy with the earth via a refrigerant-to-liquid heat exchanger and a circulating loop of antifreeze solution. The circulating loop is made of geothermal grade polyethylene tubing and acts as a subsystem between the refrigerant and the earth.
In heating, heat flows from the earth to the circulating loop, from the loop to the refrigerant, and from the refrigerant to the house - a total of three heat exchanges. In cooling, heat flows from the house to the refrigerant, from the refrigerant to the loop, and from the loop to the earth. Again, three heat exchanges.
